On Monday, April 18, 2022, Mattie B. Bailey, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Sister, at the age of 96 years accepted the invitation to become an angel in Heaven with the Lord. Mattie will be forever missed and cherished by her family and friends.
Mattie B. Saffold was born on March 29, 1926, to Sallie Bulter and Jodie Saffold in Durant Mississippi. She was the second child of 6 children: Frank "Uncle Junior" Saffold-Miller (preceded her in death), Jodie "Uncle Preacher" Saffold (Virgie Saffold) (Preceded her in death, Verde (Tee) D. Horton (Jerry Horton) (preceded her in death, Matt "Sonny" Saffold (preceded her in death) and Margaret Jones (Emmanuel Jones).
Mattie graduated from Ambrose Vocational High School, Lexington, Mississippi on May 31, 1945. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Old Pilgram Rest Missionary Baptist Church in Durant Mississippi. Later, Mattie became a life-long member of Central Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, IL on March 7, 1957.
On September 26, 1945, Thomas H. Bailey and Mattie B. Saffold were married and together. They had 8 beautiful children: Thamos H. Bailey Jr. (Angela Bailey), Howard Bailey (Patricia Bailey), Deloris Summerville (Frank Summerville), Lee A. Bailey (Patricia Bailey), Carolyn Sellers-Carter (L.C. Carter), Linda Bailey-Jones (Eddie Jones), Larry Bailey (Karen West) and Denise Sims (Marvin Sims). Mattie also left and amazing legacy of 19 Grandchildren, 26 Great-Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Mattie worked for Cook County Hospital currently known as "Stroger Hospital" for 44 years. She dedicated her life to her children, grandchildren and always helped others. She will be forever remembered and honored.
