Richard James Schlesser, age 75, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2021 in Tinley Park, surrounded by his family.
He was born November 21, 1945 in San Bernadino, California and grew up in New City community of Chicago, attending Tilden Tech High School. Rich served in the Navy on the USS Constellation. He spent most of his career working as a mechanic and parts clerk at car dealerships in the southwest suburbs of Chicago.
In his earlier years, he enjoyed umpiring, coaching his daughters’ softball teams, and camping with his family and friends in the summer. He also enjoyed fishing trips and playing cards with his brothers. In his later years, his grandchildren were the center of his universe. He was a proud grandpa and made it a priority to be at soccer and football games, band and choir concerts, and dance recitals.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Rosemary (nee Bandes), children Carolyn (Richard) Gomez, Annette, Joseph (Michele), and Matthew Schlesser. Beloved Grandpa of Julia and Katherine Gomez, David Ocasio, Ronald Bender, Daniel Hawking, Joseph and CJ Schlesser. Preceded in death by his parents Francis Schlesser and Ida Principe, and sister Carolyn Schlesser. Fond brother of John (Rosemarie) Schlesser, Frank (MaryAnn) Schlesser, Anthony (Jean) Schlesser, Phillip (Karen) Schlesser, and Helen (Juan) Ponce de Leon.
Memorial visitation Saturday 4:00 p.m. until time of Funeral Service 7:30 p.m. at Maher Funeral Home, 17101 71st Avenue, Tinley Park, Illinois 60477.
